Program:         Domestic Violence Shelter
Reports to:      Shelter Program Director
The shelter is a 60-day emergency shelter open 24-hours a day. With a 65 bed capacity, the shelter provides services to men, women and children of all ages who are victims of domestic violence. The shelter provides shelter to victims from around the world due to being one of the first shelters in the country to provide services to men. The shelter provides the following supportive services:
• 24-hour hotline
• Peer counseling
• Maintaining a business center
• Shelter
• Emergency food and clothing
• Legal assistance with temporary restraining orders/permanent restraining orders
• Response to law enforcement calls
• Response to hospital emergency room calls
• Transportation
• Counseling for children
• Social service advocacy
• Court advocacy/accompaniment
• Household establishment
Additional services include: individual and group therapy, domestic violence education/prevention groups, safety planning, emergency safety moves, assistance in applying for financial assistance, assistance in applying for housing opportunities, resources and referrals. The shelter assist an average of 330 people per year. All of the services are provided by domestic violence advocates on shelter grounds. 

  • High School Graduate or equivalent;
  • Two years of case management experience;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence;
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to the unique circumstances of underserved populations and to survivors of domestic violence;
  • Ability to work in partnership with other team members;
  • Ability to work well in a crisis situation;
  • Serve as a stable non-judgmental role model;
  • Good writing and verbal communication skills;
  • Work independently and be able to make decisions when necessary;
  • Able to maintain a supportive, calm and professional attitude at all times;
  • Accountability – be on time for scheduled shifts;
  • Be able to read and write English;
  • Bilingual Preferred.
  • Answer 24-hour hotline and business telephone lines;
  • Manage initial intake for new emergency clients, including safety and service planning;
  • Intensive case management, supportive counseling and crisis intervention;
  • Provide ongoing service planning with clients and maintain written records of all service plans and achievements;
  • Respond appropriately to clients’ individual needs for clothing, necessities and supplies, as well as their needs for information, referral and access to community resources to assist with self-sufficiency;
  • Assures quality service by documenting client activity, maintaining accurate statistical data, filling out forms and records in a timely manner and following all ethical and legal requirements;
  • Assist client to coordinate health, mental health, legal, employment, education, criminal/civil case, DPSS, GAIN, CalWORKs appointments;
  • Manage case files and provide detailed progress notes on a daily basis;
  • Ensure protection of clients and confidentiality;
  • Interact with shelter residents utilizing trauma informed care approach;
  • Co-facilitate and/ or conduct groups structured to the needs of shelter residents (i.e. Parenting skills, life skills, resume writing, job search etc._
  • Provide information/referrals to victims, when necessary;
  • Conscientiously communicate information between shifts;
  • Maintain log book;
  • Maintain and update referral book as necessary;
  • Respond to all persons on agency grounds in a calm, supportive and professional manner;
  • Crisis/peer counseling with clients/residents;
  • Provide court accompaniment, as necessary;
  • Follow and enforce all shelter rules and procedures;
  • Closing out clients/resident files;
  • Provide transportation based on client needs;
  • Log all in-coming calls, hotlines, messages, and possible problems in the agency logbook;
  • Maintain copies of paperwork in master book file;
  • Assist in the care and maintenance of the shelter;
  • Ensure a clean and sanitary residential environment. Clean and sanitize rooms after clients exit. Pack client belongings as needed;
  • Perform routine chores and cleaning task assigned by shift to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the shelter facility;
  • Shelter ground checks;
  • Maintain a positive cooperative work approach and foster teamwork among co-workers;
  • Follow all policies and procedures of the agency.
  • Must have a valid California Driver’s License;
  • Auto Insurance;
  • Clean driving record;
  • Ability to work possible weekends and holidays, when needed;
  • Employee will be required to complete a TB test, fingerprinting, drug screen (employment pending on drug screen), 40-hour Domestic Violence training and CPR/First Aid certification.
Hours: 40 hours a week - must be willing to work flexible hours, including evening shifts, weekends and holidays
