SARS Response Advocate

SARS (Sexual Assault Response Services) works with clients of all ages who have been victims of sexual or physical violence. Staff and trained advocates respond to the Antelope Valley Hospital, Palmdale Regional Medical Center or Kaiser Permanente 24 hours 7 days a week to assist victims of sexual and physical violence. Advocates respond to the victim and stays with the victim from entry to the emergency room, law enforcement and forensic interview, nurse exam and through recovery. The advocate provides: emotional support, resources and referrals, ensuring the victim’s rights are not violated, follow ups and one on one counseling. Advocates respond to approximately 300 emergency room calls each year.

SARS is not only comprised of the sexual assault response service but the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) team, California Department of Health College Sexual Assault Prevention team (CDPH) and the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). Each program has their own niche yet is firm in the same foundation of the prevention of sexual assault. Each program works closely with Antelope Valley Hospital Forensic Services team, has a 24 hour 7 days a week hotline, participates in community education and offers 1-1 crisis counseling.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years’ minimum experience in victim services and a knowledge and understanding of sexual violence.
  • One-year experience as a hospital advocate, providing information and support services before, during and after the medical forensic examination.
  • Basic knowledge of the criminal justice system and victimology.
  • Knowledge of trauma informed supportive services for sexual assault victims of all ages.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to all forms of harassment, dating violence and sexual assault.
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to the unique circumstances of underserved populations and to survivors of sexual assault.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well in a crisis situation.
  • Serve as a stable non-judgmental role model.
  • Work independently and be able to make decisions when necessary.
  • Able to maintain a supportive, calm and professional attitude at all times.
  • Ability to be accountable to peers and community.
  • Bilingual Preferred.

Duties:

  • Serve as an advocate two to three shifts per week.
  • Provide crisis intervention to sexual assault victims.
  • Be present with the victim at the hospital before, during and after the medical forensic examination and police report.
  • Provide care, support and advocacy to those who report incidents of sexual assault or interpersonal violence.
  • Provide personal, medical and legal advocacy to victims of sexual assault.
  • Make appropriate referrals and community resources to victims.
  • Assist with safety planning and provide guidance.
  • Be present at the trial to lend support to the victims and their families.
  • Develop rapport and maintain regular contact with victims to assess their need for supportive services and/or make modifications to reporting options, safety planning and service referrals.
  • Ensure victims/survivor confidentiality and safety at all times.
  • Enhance and build resources to meet the specific needs of sexual assault victims.
  • Document and maintain confidential client files on all services provided.
  • Provide case management support to survivors of dating/domestic/sexual violence, human trafficking and stalking.

Requirements:

  • Must have a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Auto Insurance.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays.
  • Employee will be required to complete a TB test, fingerprinting, drug screen (employment pending on drug screen), 40-hour Domestic Violence training and CPR/First Aid certification.Qualifications

Hours:

Monday – Friday  8am – 5pm
(may be required to work other than normal duty hours, to include evenings, holidays and/or on call status)
